At the beginning of English 10 we had to create goals for our writing and I didn't really think anything of it when we made them but after writing our first essay it really showed how much I really had to work on. Everything I had listed and more was wrong with my essay and It really showed how much harder I was going to have to work on my essays.
Before this year I didn't really think of myself as a good writer at all. Most of the time my writing grades turn out even lower than I expected and I don’t even have good expectations. I think a lot of times I go in spurts where I try really hard and other times where I don’t try at all and in the end the part where I don’t try ends up failing me. I do believe that after this year I have become a better writer because practice makes better, not perfect.
One of my goals was actually something I went back and added to the document that listed my goals, and it was to be better at starting and ending a paper. After writing my first essay I didn't realize how important it was to catch the reader's eye at the beginning and leave them thinking about the paper long after their done reading. After this semester of English 10 I think I have slightly improved in this by slowing down and thinking about introduction techniques, and creating better conclusions.
Over all I think that the practice Mrs. Boes made us/me do made me be a better writer. I know I will never be a perfect writer, but I also know that I can take what I learned this semester from Mrs. Boes and apply it to my essays with my future teachers and hopefully learn more to be a better writer.
